Scan stock with your phone: no barcode scanner needed

If you have an Android phone, you already have a barcode reader. CheckThis reads barcodes with the phone's camera in Stock management and in APOPS POS, the point of sale, so you can count shelves, receive deliveries and sell at the counter without buying scanners first.

What you do with the phone

Which barcodes matter

Items without a barcode

Loose goods, items you pack yourself and spare parts get an internal EAN-13 starting with 20, a range GS1 keeps for in-house use, so it never clashes with a manufacturer's code. Labels print on A4 sheets with the name and price. To sell your own products through supermarkets, register official barcodes with GS1 Kenya.

When a scanner still helps

A busy till that scans hundreds of items a day is faster with a handheld USB or Bluetooth scanner. It works without setup, because it types the code like a keyboard. iPhones and Windows browsers cannot read barcodes from the camera yet, so use a scanner or type the code there.

Questions

Do I need to buy a barcode scanner?

No. An Android phone's camera reads the barcodes in CheckThis stock management and APOPS POS. A handheld scanner is optional, for very busy counters or for iPhones and Windows computers.

Does it work on an iPhone?

Not with the camera yet: iPhone browsers do not offer barcode reading to web apps. Use an Android phone, a Bluetooth scanner paired with the iPhone, or type the code.

What if my products have no barcode?

Generate internal barcodes for them in Stock management and print labels on A4 sheets. They start with 20 and are meant for use inside your business.
